Christiana Matzke (Hicks)

Christiana Matzke Hicks of Edna died August 22, 2012 at the age of 63 after a courageous fight against cancer. She was born February 9, 1949 in El Campo to the late Manuel and Marie Whitehead Matzke. Chris, as she was known, never met a stranger and loved visiting with all her family and friends. She enjoyed working in her yard, doing various crafts and loved to sew. She was a genius when it came to whipping up an outfit and later she picked up quilting to continue sharing that love. Her greatest joy in life came from spending time with her grandkids. From the minute they were born, she was with them every chance she could get and attended every activity they were involved in. Nana was their cheerleader, their support and their world. She is survived by her husband Larry C. Hicks of Edna, daughter Jennifer L. Morton of El Campo, step-sons Ray Hicks and Todd Hicks of Edna, grandchildren Cheyenne and Cory Morton of El Campo and Scarllett Minoz and Hunter Hicks of Edna, sisters Lu Matzke and Jane Matzke of El Campo, brother Frank Matzke of Newton, mother-in-law Clara Hicks of Edna, sister-in-law Karen Hicks of Victoria, nieces Rachel Matzke of Newton and Jacky Gonzales of Needville, and nephew Bryan Matzke of Nacogdoches. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Norris "Bubba" Matzke and father-in-law Chester Hicks. Visitation will begin 2:00 pm Thursday at Triska Funeral Home with a parish rosary being offered at 7:30 pm. The funeral Mass will be 10:30 am Friday, August 24, 2012, at St. Philip Catholic Church with Rev. Gary Janak officiating. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens of Edna. Pallbearers will be Ray Hicks, Todd Hicks, Bryan Matzke, Jeff Hicks, Troylinn Quinn, and Rodney Cooper. Honorary bearers will be Dean Lowery, Robert Curlee, Glenn Johnson, Lee Putman, Jim Carroll, and Hunter Hicks.
